 | | Some 30.000 illegal immigrants arriving from Africa reached the Italian coasts in 2008. Bad weather and sea conditions don't stop the arrivals. Packed on unsafe boats they travel at the mercy of the waves.Their only chance to survive is to be rescued by Italy's Coast Guard, that, together with the Sovrano Ordine di Malta volonteers provide them with assistance and lead them ashore. The troubles of their journey, along with the sadness for what they have left behind, are written on their faces. They were lucky to reach Lampedusa for some of them the "Promised land" for other the beginning of a new gruelling experience. | |
