Bolivia
(Oruro depa
rtment), March 2009 - Salar de Tunupa, the world's largest salt flat,
locates near the crest of the Andes in Oruro Department at 3,650 meters above
sea level. The flat is estimated to contain 10 billion tons of salt, of which
less than 25,000 tons is extracted annually. All miners working in the Salar
belong to Colchani's cooperative. Here lies more than half the world's reserves
of Lithium.
